John's 18XX Site -- 1856 Section

1856 - Home page

This part of the site is intended to provide the player in my e-mail games of 1856 with a quick reference to the main points of the game.

Players should have access to a copy of the original rules (©1992, 1995) and game. A FAQ has been created by Steve Thomas for the Blackwater Station Platform. With Steve's agreement I am able to include in here (link above), I have included comment, where appropriate, as to how I interpret the clarifications.

I have become aware in December 2013 that apparently Mayfair has started shipping a different rulebook from that originally included, this is Version 2.2d updated June 27, 1994, and also appears to be downloadable from some internet sites. I do not follow this version, I use the ©1992, 1995 one.
I've only seen the pdf manifestation of version 2.2d and from this I determined that an easy way to tell the two versions apart is that version 2.2d has the same background/watermark image down the right hand side of each page, whereas the (©1992, 1995) version does not. Additionally the (©1992, 1995) version has the text towards the centre of each double page whereas the 2.2d version always has the text to the left hand side of the page.

These pages are not a substitute for the Game and Rulebook and indeed are not intended to be.

The game rulebook (©1992, 1995 version) and the FAQ page of this site will always take precedence over the summaries on this site, and other editions of the rules, for the determination of rule resolution.
However note that the House Rules/Guidance Notes make some exceptions to this. See them.

You are referred to Blackwater Station Platform for rule clarifications and generally loads of good info about the 18XX games in general.

Visit Blackwater Station Platform.

Keith Thomasson maintains a good website which includes the 18XX Rules Difference list which indicates the differences between the different 18XX games.

Visit the Rules Difference Section of Keith's site.

Keith does have downloadable maps and tile sheets, but take care with the tile sheets as he uses his own orientation codes which do not always agree with those that I use.

Use the top or margin buttons to come back to this page.

The maps on this site are based on those created by Rob Thomasson and are used with his permission.
